In preparation for my first time spinning at Club Underground this upcoming Friday night, not only am I cleaning my records and ironing my hairbows, I have also prepared a soundtrack in the momentous occasion of your next crush. Yes, your next crush! Whether this crush will be upon a babe you meet at Club Underground, or on the latest novel you’ve plucked from your overflowing ‘to read’ shelf, or on a new cardigan (ooo!) remains to be seen. But here are beloved songs guaranteed to jumpstart your heart and make your hips sway.

Real Estate – It’s Real (2011)

Released on Domino in 2011, this entire album is melodic and jangly and superbly sweet. Perfect, dreamy pop.

Beach Fossils - What a Pleasure (2011)
‘What a Pleasure’ was hands down one of the more satisfying albums I became entranced with last year. This song sticks to your ribs like when a stranger smiles at you from across the a train car.

Veronica Falls - Starry Eyes (2010)
This UK band spins saccharine and sass in this song, while tipping their caps to the Ronettes with a noticeable drumming nod to “Be My Baby” in the bridge. Thank goodness gracious for Veronica Falls.

Kalyanji - Somebody to Love (1969)
Just imagine you just found your crush and you’ve been making out with them all night long. Then you come home alone and take a moment to stare into the mirror, smile and start freaking out while thinking of just how much you can’t wait to see them again. Yeah, this song is kind of like that.

Felice Taylor - It May Be Winter Outside (But In My Heart It’s Spring) (1967)
Released in 1967 on Mustang Records, this seasonal ditty is bound to melt the snow in your heart. It’ll also be joining me for your twisting pleasure at Club Underground this Friday.

Etta James - Seven Day Fool (1961)
Now that’s what I call SOUL.

Nolan Chance and the Diablos - Oh If I (1959)
This track could take anyone to sugar-coated, Doowop dreamland.

Just because I’m so excited about DJing with the Club Underground crew, the first five people this Friday, February 3rd that come by to the DJ booth upstairs and greet me by saying, “SOUL POWER” will receive a homemade mixtape made by me, which will include all of the above songs!

I also just compiled my KALX Best of 2011 show for you to stream at your leisure, in the case you want to hear some more crush-worthy tunes.

My bags are packed full of favorite Northern Soul stompers, brassy Girl Groups and 60′s jams, and I can’t wait to shimmy, shake and swoon with all you lovely kittens and cats this Friday at Grand Star!
